To explore the most scenic National Park of Argentina, the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, the major gateway is El Calafate. It's a nice and quiet village, lying at the south shore of Lago Argentina, the biggest lake of Argentina. There are lots of nice places to stay overnight and many shops to buy whatever you need to prepare trekkings.

To visit the beautiful Glaciar Perito Moreno it's the most convenient to book a tour in El Calafate. This glacier grows directly into a side branch of Lago Argentina (Brazo Rico) and builds a natural barrier for the southern part of that branch, which dames up the water up to 18m. Every five to seven years (used to be three to four, when global temperatures were a little lower), the pressure of the water causes the dam to break. The glaciers front is a wall of ice of 60m height and is around 4km wide. Often huge pieces of ice thunderous fall down into the water, drifting away as icebergs.

Four hours by bus one reaches the little village El Chalten. From El Chalten start all trails to Cerro Fitz Roy & Cerro Torre. Here one really gets in touch with the Patagonian climate. Behind the mountains lies the big continental iceshelf (22'000km2). It is the source of many glaciers (Glaciar Viedma, Glaciar Upsala, Glaciar Moreno) flowing down eastwards and feeding the big lakes (Lago Buenos Aires, Lago O'Higgins, Lago Viedma, Lago Argentina) of the Province of Santa Cruz.
